Pet Safety at Night

Tonight it will be dark at 4:45 pm!

As the days become shorter, it may be difficult to get that evening walk in before dark.  That doesn’t mean you should stop those after-dinner strolls with your dog; it only means that you need to be a little more cautious. It is really important for both you and your dog to be visible at night.

Even though we have a blind couple in our neighborhood who walks their dog late at night, my husband is still taken by surprise when he rounds the corner at 11:30 pm. They take many precautions; however, it is just not something you expect to see at that time of night. Most drivers are not expecting dog walkers to be out after dark, and it is imperative to give them every chance to see you.

There are several ways to accomplish this task.

Be Visible:

  • When walking at night, wear light-colored clothing.
  • Wear reflective clothing or a reflective vest.
  • Put a reflective vest on your dog too.

Walk Dogs on Short Leashes:

  • Keep your dog close to you.
  • Dogs on a long leash are not as easily seen by drivers at night.

Light Your Way:

  • Carrying a flashlight is a good idea even if you are walking in an area with streetlights.
  • Consider a headlamp for really dark areas; it is hands-free and the light can be adjusted.
  • Try a hat with an LED light built into the front.
  • Clip-on LED lights are another alternative.
  • Strobe lights attached to your dog help alert drivers that you are on the road.

Walking your dog after dark is not the same as walking in the daylight.  Pay particular attention to these night safety rules.

Night Safety Rules:

  • Use sidewalks and off-road paths, rather than the street.
  • Walk facing traffic so you can see and react to vehicles.
  • Use extra caution when crossing streets. Drivers do not expect pedestrians to be out walking at night.
  • Don’t be blinded by the light. Headlights can make it difficult for you to see. Choose paths without frequent changes in lighting levels.
