The summer’s hot. You want to cocoon in air conditioning. And so does your dog. But you know that a dog needs exercise to keep from being bored and also to prevent poor behavior. A good way to keep your pet exercised is mentally. Give your pet challenging toys – to make them interactive dogs. Toys can take the place of outdoor activity and occupy a dog’s mind while using up excess energy.
There are many different kinds of interactive dog toys. Toys like Kong have a hollow place where a pet treat can be stuffed. It occupies your pet by making them dig and bite until they can release and enjoy the reward. There are smart toys like puzzles where the challenge for the dog is to find the reward by either moving a series of covers or pieces until the hidden treat is found.
And there are standard toys that can be used inside, like rope toys that are good for an indoor tug of war or fetch. Puppies like to chew on the large knot ends and some dogs shake and flip them, retrieve them then start all over again. Stuffed animals can be played with in the same way or carried around as a friend that can be calming. Ones with a squeaker can entertain by allowing your pet to make music for themselves and your family.
Chew toys are important because they prevent chewing that is destructive – like legs of chairs, shoes, etc. It’s important to choose the right size chew toys or any toys. Toys that are too small are dangerous because they can be swallowed.
When shopping for pet toys, choose safe toys! Always pick toys that are the correct size for your dog and “non-toxic”.
